Acne is a complex condition, with many different types and causes for acne. Just as there are several types of acne, there are various options available to treat the condition and prevent future breakouts.
Blackheads are commonly caused by an over-production of sebum or oils. When the pore is open, oxygen will create a small layer of oxidized oil within the hair follicle, turning the top of the pore black. This gives blackheads their name and darkened appearance. Blackheads are especially common among teens and often found in the nose and forehead areas.
Our medical esthetician will first cleanse the skin and exfoliate. If necessary, manual extractions can be performed using a tool to open up the pores and remove oil and debris. Extractions may sound intimidating or painful, but the treatment is completely painless and simple. A mask in the treatment area can be used to further treat the skin. Finally, moisturizer and SPF are applied to the skin.
Following this facial, your esthetician will advise a daily regimen with appropriate products to keep the skin clear, including suitable cleansers and at-home exfoliation to prevent future blackheads from forming.
Acne Simplex / Closed Comedone
Occasional acne, breakout-prone skin, or sensitivity may be caused by a variety of factors. Your esthetician will first work to understand what is causing your breakouts, which may be anything from over-production of oils and sebum clogging the hair follicles, sensitivity to topical products or makeup, or lifestyle habits including a poor diet. Closed comedones are also referred to as “whiteheads” and occur most often on the forehead, chin, or cheeks.
Acne Simplex / Closed Comedone Treatment
A traditional facial including cleansing, exfoliation, and extraction is an excellent treatment option for acne simplex/closed comedones. Your esthetician will follow extractions with masks and moisturizers selected for your skin type. Following treatment, it can take several days for acne to completely subside and heal due to bacteria present in the pores. Our esthetician will also recommend a suitable at-home routine to maintain clear skin.
Hormonal Acne / Acne Vulgaris
Acne can often be related to hormonal fluctuation. Acne vulgaris refers to acne where inflammation or bacterial lesions are present and can include cystic or nodular acne.
Hormonal Acne and Acne Vulgaris treatment
The treatment for hormonal acne or acne vulgaris involves loosening the top layer of skin and opening the pores, which allows treatment products to penetrate more effectively. Ingredients for this process may include salicylic acid, resorcinol, sulfur, or benzoyl peroxide. Extractions are typically performed to remove debris from the pores, and chemical peels can be effective. While today’s chemical peels are very comfortable, patients may require 5-10 days of downtime following this treatment. If acne is severe, repeated facial treatments about every two weeks can be helpful. Our esthetician will also recommend at-home products and regimens to keep the skin clear and healthy.
Botox is perhaps the most well-known injectable product which effectively creates a smoother and more youthful appearance. Botox can be used to reduce wrinkles around the eyes or through the forehead that are caused by repeated facial expressions.
Facial fillers include products like Juvederm, Restylane, or Radiesse. These are used to create a more youthful look by restoring lost volume or to non-surgically augment areas including the lips, chin, or cheeks.
Clear + Brilliant is a laser treatment option that is very useful for a variety of skin concerns thanks to advanced technology. It can be adapted for a range of uses including melasma, enlarged pores, and various tone or texture issues.
Chemical Peels are available in a variety of formulas to resurface the skin no matter your skin type or concerns. Chemical peels are a great non-surgical option for aging signs like fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation issues like sunspots or rosacea, and texture issues like acne scars.
Professional microneedling treatments use a dermapen to create microchannels in the skin, stimulating the body’s natural healing process. This results in improved elasticity and an overall younger, illuminated look.

Do you know why some skincare products are only available at a doctor’s office?
Because the active ingredients in them are more potent.
This means they do their job: reducing fine lines, erasing age spots, and improving skin tone and texture—a lot more quickly and effectively than over the counter options. We’ll be happy to discuss any of the options below at a personal consultation.
ZO Medical Skincare
Developed by dermatologist Dr. Zein Obagi, ZO Medical contains a full spectrum of therapeutic skincare designed to treat difficult skin conditions. These products are only available from a physician through an authorized medical practice, and we’re proud to be on that list.
Each of our facials is developed by our Licensed Medical Esthetician Wendy DeGiacomo and specialized for common skin concerns at any age. Our professional facial treatments are an excellent way to thoroughly cleanse and nourish the skin, addressing common issues such as acne, fine lines, signs of aging, or dullness and uneven texture. During a consultation, Wendy can help choose the best facial option for you.

Do I need eye cream?
While not technically necessary for your daily skincare routine, eye cream can help protect skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines when using high-quality products specifically designed for use around the eye area.
Is microneedling safe?
Yes, in the hands of a trained physician like Dr. Ditesheim, the Dermapen 3 MD is entirely safe. The device is designed with robust safety features to ensure patients are properly treated with microneedling.

Is a chemical peel good for skin?
A chemical peel is an effective way to improve your skin tone and texture and create a more youthful, rejuvenated look.
How long does a chemical peel last?
After a chemical peel, you can expect the surface layer of skin to peel for about 2-3 days on average.
Can you see results after 1 chemical peel?
You will see results after one chemical peel, but most patients undergo a series of chemical peels to achieve their ideal goal results.
What does the Red Carpet facial do for the skin?
A facial will naturally restore the quality and the texture of skin, and a series of facials will keep the skin refreshed. The objective of this facial is to increase the cell turn over, leaving skin rejuvenated with a healthier layer. An active facial addresses the signs of aging spots, creates an even skin tone, gives the skin firmness, and increases hydration to help the skin better absorb products, giving the skin what it needs for a better complexion.
Are there different facials for different skin types?
Yes, skin is like any other organ in your body, it needs to be paid attention to. And like everyone is different, all skin types are different with varying needs and sensitivity. The condition of your skin plays a large role in choosing the best facial option for you. Our practice has all the tools necessary to improve the skin and our esthetician will guide you towards the right treatment your skin needs to glow and be restored.
Do facials require downtime?
Facials are very comfortable and relaxing, and usually do not require any downtime. With that being said, medical spa products are very active and will be more affective. With the proper guidance of our experienced staff, you can achieve the desired results from our effective treatment options. We as a practice will deliver the right expectation and a pleasant experience for optimal results.
How can acne be treated?
Acne can be treated with active ingredients and exfoliation to prevent dead cell build-up on the skins surface and inside the pores. The elimination of oils and dead cell into the pores will prevent the formation of blackheads and whiteheads. Our customized treatment will eliminate bacteria that can then grow within the pores. Our experts will create a customized regimen to treat your specific type of acne.
How many treatments will I need for acne?
Acne is a very complex issue. To effectively treat acne, it must be targeted in many different ways to see results and control the condition. Our esthetician will provide you with a customized program, which will vary from person-to-person. On average, you can expect to schedule in-office acne treatments every 2-3 weeks to control and eliminate acne.
Does acne treatment eliminate scars as well?
Acne treatment alone usually does not address acne scarring. To treat acne scars from previous acne, another service such as Icon Laser or microneedling can be paired with your acne treatment plan. These devices are very precise for treating scars but should only be used when you no longer have active acne.
Is the Hydrating Calming Facial anti-aging?
Yes, because we will use some calming but powerful antioxidants that are essential building blocks to restore the skin. However, this facial is also used for patients who are super sensitive or have an irritation reaction caused by excess sun exposure, topical product irritation, or other factors. Our esthetician will customize for your specific needs to ensure your skin is repaired and protected.
If my skin is irritated, red, or sunburned, am I still a candidate for the Hydrating Calming Facial?
Yes. We have many different techniques that our medical esthetician will customize for your specific needs. Our esthetician has many years of experience in treating skin post-op or after various procedures, so your skin will be in good hands regardless of the condition it is in.
Which is better, chemical peel or laser resurfacing?
Laser skin resurfacing typically produces results faster, but chemical peels can be more customizable depending on the patients’ needs. An aesthetician or plastic surgeon can recommend the best treatment option for you during a consultation.
How can I heal faster after laser resurfacing?
Maintaining proper skin hydration after laser skin resurfacing will help you heal faster and increase your comfort throughout the recovery process.
What should you not do after laser?
After receiving laser treatments, you should avoid excess sun exposure, hair removal, exposing skin to hot water, or topical beauty products except as directed.
What does Clear + Brilliant do?
Clear + Brilliant gently resurfaces the skin to create a rejuvenated appearance. It is useful for skin concerns including enlarged pores, sun damage, or uneven tone and texture.
How long do Clear + Brilliant results last?
For most patients, Clear + Brilliant results last for several months after their treatment. Patients can receive follow-up treatments as often as every 3-4 weeks to maintain results.
Is Clear + Brilliant better than Microneedling?
Clear + Brilliant creates better skin-tightening results compared to microneedling for a majority of patients. The best treatment option for you depends on factors like your skin type. An aesthetician can recommend your best treatment plan.
