Scarring is a common concern for patients considering breast augmentation surgery. Having questions about how the procedure will change your body is expected. Our patients often ask, “Will a breast augmentation leave a scar?” Some surgery scarring is inevitable. However, you can significantly reduce scarring with the proper techniques and aftercare.
We understand surgery scarring is a big concern. Charlotte’s board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Ditesheim, offers techniques for minimizing the appearance of scars. He works with your body’s natural contours to select a discreet incision site.
Discover everything you need to know about breast implant scars, including how long it takes for them to fade, tips to speed up the healing process, and answers to common questions you may have as your surgery day approaches.
Breast augmentation scars can be located in different areas, depending on the procedure and incision type. Breast implant incisions can be underneath the breast, surrounding the nipple, or in the armpit.
All breast augmentation incisions will be as discreet as possible to address the leading concern of visible scarring among patients. You and Dr. Ditesheim will decide where your incision will be depending on the type of breast implant, implant size, and personal preference. Dr. Ditesheim offers periareolar, inframammary, and transaxillary incisions.
Dr. Ditesheim has successfully performed hundreds of breast augmentations in North Carolina and can answer any questions you have about scarring. Book your breast implant consultation in Charlotte at Ditesheim Cosmetic Surgery to learn more about the procedure.
Every patient heals at their own rate. If you avoid straining yourself and follow your aftercare instructions, scars should flatten and fade from red to pink after 2 – 3 months. After 6 – 12 months, scars should be very thin and faint.
While Dr. Ditesheim uses plastic surgery techniques to minimize breast augmentation scars, there are some things you can do at home to reduce the appearance of your scars.
Use the tips below to reduce the appearance of scars after breast augmentation.
● Avoid smoking for several weeks before and after your surgery date. Smoking slows down the body’s natural healing process.
● Keep your scars out of the sun for at least two months post-op. Always wear sunscreen if you spend time in the sun.
● Minimize movements that put excessive tension on the incision site during the initial healing period.
● Please follow Dr. Ditesheim’s post-op care instructions carefully. Patients will receive a detailed aftercare plan, including physical activity restrictions and general care.
● Attend your follow-up appointments with Dr. Ditesheim to monitor your healing process.
Scarring after surgery is natural. Breast implant scars are permanent, but the scars become less noticeable over time. Following your aftercare instructions, eating a healthy diet, and drinking plenty of water will help care for your body post-surgery.
