Choosing Your Breast Implants

It’s important to understand that picking out the right implant isn’t just about increasing total cup size. It’s about creating an ideal aesthetic shape based on each individual’s personal goals and current anatomy.

Dr. Ditesheim’s unique sizing process allows patients interested in breast augmentation to experience different sizes and shapes of implants to see how they might prefer one or the other. He trusts those who come in for a consultation to know in general what’s right for their goals, and he’ll recommend the surgical techniques to help them achieve it.

Choosing Implant Material

Dr. Ditesheim has performed hundreds of breast augmentations using both saline and silicone breast implants, either of which can deliver beautiful, natural-looking results in the right candidates. Together, you and Dr. Ditesheim will go over the details of each implant type in order to determine if there’s one that might better meet your goals for breast augmentation surgery in Charlotte.

Saline Breast Implants

Saline implants are less expensive than silicone ones and are FDA-approved for cosmetic use in women 18 and older. Since the implants are inserted empty and filled after placement, women who opt for saline implants typically have smaller scars. Filling after placement also allows for more precisely symmetrical results, particularly in women with significant asymmetry prior to surgery.

Although saline implants can sometimes show visible surface rippling or wrinkles, they remain a cost-effective choice that can deliver beautiful results in the right candidate.

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone gel implants are FDA-approved for cosmetic use in women 22 and older and are currently the more popular choice for breast augmentation among breast augmentation patients in Charlotte. Filled with a thick silicone gel that has a jelly-like texture, silicone implants won’t wrinkle, and the contents are designed to stay in place even in the unlikely event of a breach in the outer implant shell.

Gummy bear implants offer a third choice for women seeking breast augmentation procedures from plastic surgeons. A different type of silicone implant, the form-stable silicone gel in gummy bear implants is firm yet soft, much like the gummy candies they’re nicknamed after.

I am more satisfied that I ever imagined and by the way, my husband is too.

My breasts have just enough sag to command attention. They are sooooooo awesome in a bikini - but because of the sag, they look super natural.

Your Breast Sizing Session

The type, size, and placement of your breast implants are determined by a number of factors, including your goals from surgery, breast anatomy, skin elasticity, and body proportions.

Here’s how our sizing process works:

  • We’ll go over your options: saline or silicone implants, shaped vs. round, size, and profile, paying attention to your personal preferences about all of these choices.
  • You’ll get time to try on implants to find the “custom fit” that best complements your body shape, your chest, and your idea of what looks great on you.
  • You will be able to “feel” the shape of your new breast size and even see what you look like in tops or camisoles.

Dr. Ditesheim’s Unique Sizing Process

We feel that our sizing process provides patients with an accurate method of “previewing” the results of your Charlotte breast augmentation before going under the knife. By providing clear expectations from the first consultation, Dr. Ditesheim’s patients are deeply satisfied with their finished results, which meet or exceed their expectations.

We Focus on Your Safety & Results from the Very Start

  • We believe that preparation is the key to a successful plastic surgery and recovery. We’ll give you the care and information you need throughout the entire breast augmentation surgical process. Dr. Ditesheim has hand-selected each individual who participates in your care; from the nursing staff to the anesthesiologist.
  • We’ll also provide pre-operative suggestions such as dietary recommendations, quitting smoking, and prescription advice (current and future) to reduce post-surgical swelling and bruising.
  • We are always readily available and approachable to address any questions or concerns you may have.
  • Our commitment to patient safety is a top priority. All general anesthesia for our patients is administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist; that is, a medical doctor specializing in general anesthesia care, as opposed to a nurse.

About Breast Augmentation Surgery

Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure, typically performed in our on-site AAAASF fully accredited surgical suite. Your entire surgery experience will take several hours, including time to relax before your procedure, about 1 hour for the surgery itself, and 30–40 minutes of post-procedure recovery.

After your breast augmentation procedure, your recovery is an important part of the final outcome. We take special care of our patients in the following ways:

  • We check in with them by phone the night of the surgery
  • Dr. Ditesheim personally sees all patients the morning following surgery
  • All patients have Dr. Ditesheim’s cell phone number and our nurse has a special cell phone for surgery patients in case of emergency

Your Recovery Process

After your procedure, you will likely sleep for a few hours at home and then have a light meal. Some women will be pain-free and drive themselves to the office the next day, others with more muscle work may have more soreness or pressure-type discomfort for 3-5 days. We have a complete pain management program in place to ensure a more comfortable recovery process.

Our personalized recovery program helps you enjoy your new look quickly—and for years to come!

Dr. Ditesheim will provide you with a prescription for pain medication to ease any discomfort following surgery. He encourages early movement and activity as soon as possible, beginning the next day. Easy exercise can be resumed by the second week. Sex is usually limited based on the level of discomfort, although each person is different. High-impact sports like water-skiing should be avoided for the first 6 weeks.

Your Incision Options

All breast augmentation incisions will be as inconspicuous as possible, as Dr. Ditesheim understands that visible scarring is a leading concern among breast augmentation patients. Your unique incision pattern is based on the type of breast implant, implant size, and either your or Dr. Ditesheim’s preference.

Incision options include:

  • Periareolar, around the nipple and areola
  • Inframmamary, in the crease underneath the breast
  • Transaxillary, in the armpit

Breast Implant Placement

A major factor of the final look and feel of your implants are where they are placed in the breast pocket. Dr. Ditesheim offers four placement options:

  • Under the pectoralis muscle (submuscular placement)
  • Over the chest muscle, under breast tissue (subglandular placement)
  • Partially underneath the muscle (dual plane placement)
  • Under the fascia

The method used during your unique breast implant surgery depends on your desired results and Dr. Ditesheim’s recommendation. If saline implants are used, they can be filled with saline after the implants are placed in the correct location.

Breast Augmentation FAQ

If you’ve noticed a change in the size or shape of your breasts, especially after pregnancy or nursing, you may be a candidate for breast augmentation. The best candidates for breast enlargement should be in good health physically and mentally, and should have realistic expectations about their likely results.

During your consultation, Dr. Ditesheim will explain how to pick the perfect breast implants to meet your individual appearance goals, taking into account your natural anatomy and existing breast measurements. You’ll also get to try on implants right in our office so you can see how different sizes, shapes, and profiles will look on your body.

Implants can restore volume to breasts that look deflated for a fuller look, but won’t actually change the placement of your breasts. For women with significant drooping in the breasts, nipples that point downward, or an elongated breast shape, Dr. Ditesheim may recommend combining a breast lift with your augmentation.

Between the superior quality of today’s breast implants and the advances in modern-day surgical techniques, there’s never been a better time to enjoy breast augmentation results that look and feel more natural than ever before.

Any invasive surgery leaves scars behind, including breast augmentation. However, Dr. Ditesheim offers three options for discreet incision placement to ensure results look as scar-free as possible.

You’ll notice a difference in your figure immediately after surgery, although some amount of post-operative swelling may disguise your final results at first. As recovery progresses and swelling dissipates, your implants should settle into their final placement by about 1 to 3 months after surgery.

Prices for breast augmentation depend on many factors. You’ll receive an exact fee quote at your consultation. Fees include breast implants, surgical care, the facility, and anesthesia provided by an MD anesthesiologist. Financing is available, and we’ll go over your options at your personal consultation.
